Aims and Scope

The aims of the conference are to strengthen AIS research by exploring different immunological mechanisms, and their relation to information processing and problem solving. The main themes of the conference include:

  • Self-nonself models, or danger theory.
  • Network models (e.g., of B-cells).
  • Clonal selection and hypermutation.
  • Danger theory models.
  • Abstractions of other immunological processes.
  • Comparisons between AIS and other naturally-inspired paradigms.
  • Applications of AIS.
  • Theory of AIS.

The conference will provide an excellent opportunity for presenting and disseminating the latest work in the field of Artificial Immune Systems, and is the only conference dedicated entirely to the field of AIS.
All papers will be published in an issue of the Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes series.

The conference will have two streams:
- Technical Stream: For work undertaken and completed, with clear results obtained.
- Conceptual Stream: For discussion papers without results, work in progress papers etc.

News

Proceedings for This Year This year's proceedings are on-line and can be found here.

Journal to Publish ICARIS Papers The International Journal on Unconventional Computing will publish the best papers from ICARIS 2004. There are no details as yet, but they will appear here when known. See here for more information on the journal.

Registration Form The registration form is now online. Please fill in and return as described at this page. Thanks.

Notification of Acceptance There have been some problems with a couple of referees. As a result the notification of acceptance has been delayed until June 10th. We apologise the the incovenience.

Immunoinformatics There will be a special session on immunoinformatics, run by Darren Flower.

Plenary Speaker This year's plenary session speaker will be Alan Perelson. Alan is well-known for his ground-breaking work in immune network theory during the late-80's and early-90's, as well as his continual input into the Sante Fe group and their development of negative detection algorithms based on the negative selection of T-cells.

Proceedings from previous ICARIS conferences Some copies of the proceedings from ICARIS-2003 are still available, priced at 50Euro or 36UK Pounds. Please contact any of the committee for further details.
You can still get the online conference proceedings from ICARIS-2002, and Robin Callard's plenary talk. Also available are a bibtex file for ICARIS-2002, and table of contents, in .DOC format. The bibliography information for ICARIS is available at The Collection of Computer Science Bibliographies too.

Bursaries A number of bursaries will be available for PhD students to aid with the cost of conference attendance. They are particularly for students who have little or no financial support from their institution. The deadline for application is July 1st 2004. If you can not afford to register before the bursaries are awarded, please contact one of the organisers.
Please give us some idea of the area of AIS or immune modelling that you are studying in the space marked 'PhD title' Both full and part-time students may apply for a bursary. Contact the organisers if you require any further information. Application form is here.

Tutorial Sessions

There will be four tutorial sessions:

  1. Jon Timmis, University of Kent at Canterbury:
"An Introduction to Artificial Immune Systems"
  2. Filippo Castiglione, Istituto Applicazioni del Calcolo "M. Picone" Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) Rome Italy
"The immune system and related pathologies: can we get something by simulating it on a computer?"
  3. Robin Callard, Immunobiology Unit, Institute of Child Health, London UK
"Modelling the Immune System and biologically inspired computation"
  4. Leandro de Castro, Catholic University of Santos (Unisantos), Brazil
"Engineering Applications of Artificial Immune Systems"
